How to Use the Calculator

Finding the correct kVA rating for your transformer is easy. Follow these instructions to calculate and verify the appropriately sized transformer for your project.

Equations

kVA = Kilowatts/Power Factor

Kilowatts = kVA x Power Factor

Power Factor = Kilowatts/kVA

Why Convert kVA to kW?

The relationship between kVA and kW depends on the power factor (PF) of your system. Power factor is the measure of efficiency in an electrical system. It is the ratio of usable/real power (kW) to total supplied/apparent power (kVA). The kW is always less than or equal to kVA. If you size your system assuming the two are the same, you could end up getting a transformer too small to power your equipment.

Definitions

What is Kilowatt?

A Kilowatt is a measurement for the rate of power used by an electrical device. The higher the Kilowatt of a device, the more power it will need to operate.

What is Power Factor?

Power factor is an expression of energy efficiency typically displayed in a percentage. A high percentage indicates an efficient use of power.

What is kVA?

kVA stands for kilovolt-ampere, which is a unit of apparent power in an electrical system. It measures the total power, both real and reactive, in an alternating current (AC) circuit. The symbol for kilovolt-ampere is "kVA."

What is a Transformer?

A transformer is an electrical device that takes a given input voltage and changes it to a different output voltage. This change can either be an increase or a decrease in voltage. Want to know more? Learn what transformers are and how they work here.
