EC Electric contractor standing in front of three padmount transformers

University Project Gets Padmounts Five Months Sooner

When EC Electric had project deadlines threatened by delayed transformers, they turned to Maddox. Read what happened next.

Electrical contractor projects sink or swim based on reliable schedules.

EC Electric has been designing and constructing complex electrical systems since 1946. Headquartered in Portland, Oregon, the company employs more than 1,000 professionals dedicated to delivering high‑quality work safely and on schedule.

EC Electric had been contracted to separate the power system for three science buildings at the University of Oregon. Each building needed its own system, and EC Electric had to maintain power for sensitive research labs—including a zebra fish facility used for genetics and developmental biology studies.

“We had to keep the laboratories in the basement with all the aquarium equipment and the genetic testing equipment and the freezers with all of their experiments all intact while we tried to separate these three buildings’ electrical systems and reestablish a whole new system for this building all by itself. It was a project that they said couldn’t be done,” recalls Don Davison, site superintendent for EC Electric.

With the project on a tight timeline, demolition got underway. The Heustis Hall building was completely gutted except for the zebra fish lab in the basement.

But there was a problem. The initial transformer supplier had given a specific delivery date. But that date was pushed back repeatedly. Eventually, the supplier couldn’t give a date at all.

Huestis Hall on the University of Oregon campus housed the critical zebra fish lab.

EC Electric had to explore other options. So they called Maddox.

Don adds, “I didn’t realize that Maddox could provide us with the transformers with the proper specifications four to five months sooner than the original.”

Maddox provided two 1000 kVA and one 750 kVA 12470 D - 480 Y 277 padmount transformers five months ahead of the previous delivery date. Don notes, “It moved it all back to its original schedule of this project. So we were back on track. And, most critical to the University, we kept all the zebra fish alive.”

The project proceeded as planned, and EC Electric got the job done.

Don says, “I would absolutely recommend Maddox. Great team to work with. Hit their dates perfectly. Passed specifications without any issues.”
